Mobil Mission Day 4    Day 4 - Edinburgh to London

You have to love any city in the world where you wake up in the morning at 7:30 and there are still people out from the night before. Either lost or trying to find the next drinking hole, or both. So with a splash of eye drops in each eye it was out of Edinburgh and heading South on the A696 to one of my favourite places to go for a night out – Newcastle. Anyone that’s ever been there will know that there isn’t such a thing as a Friday or Saturday night. It’s every night. Instead of going down the A1, we headed for what some of you guys voted another of Britain’s great roads, the A696...

Mobil Mission Day 3    Day 3 - Manchester to Edinburgh

Sometimes in life, you should be happy to be alive, and I don’t mean after a life-changing moment. I mean just happy to be alive. Two warm pain au chocolat to start the day and a big can of Red Bull makes me happy to be alive, along with the 600 mile stretch of road ahead of me up to Fort William. Just like life, some parts will be rubbish, some parts not, but mainly rubbish. But like Sunday lunch, it is the end that’s actually the beginning for me – with my mum’s rice pudding. The end was of course Fort William and the road over to Edinburgh but that was a long way away...

Mobil Mission Day 2    Day 2 - Bristol to Manchester

My God I thought I only had to get up at silly o’clock on Saturdays but here we are day 2 and another 6 am start in order to get round all the roads that you want me to do. Well that and keep the team back at base happy, who are like a bunch of hamsters running around non-stop, phone call this, speak to that, photo with this, photo with that. But I had a lot to get through today so after a quick stop at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium and through the worst traffic so far in the centre, I’m off up to a road which I know is gonna be good. Wales is famous for many things – Tom Jones, that Church lassy, sheep, leeks and some of the best roads in the country. There are other things too but it’s getting late and I’m tired so the list will end there...

Mobil Mission Day 1    Day 1 - London to Bristol

It feels like a Saturday as the alarm went off at 5.20am, as I jumped into the shower at my uber-trendy London hotel. I never can get my head round these hotels – the bed seems to be made out of orange crates and the shower cubicle looks like something from an IKEA showroom – seriously, it was made out of painted MDF. Anyway, the chocolate croissant and the can of red bull more than made up for it as I got to the radio studio. Ten interviews later and a great long chat with the British forces radio, it was time to jump in the motor of choice, a Mercedes C180. To say I would stand out is an understatement – I look as out of place as Twiggy in a cake shop as I drove through central London to my first port of call, the M25...
